DearFriends of Taigu, The following was a letter sent to the Boston Taiwanese Association. Rev. Burton Tan has asked me to resent this message to you. Hello TAA Members: Recently, we have witnessed the exciting exchanges of ideas about the movie directed by Lee Ang, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon“. In the ensuing discussions, the identity and the definitionof Taiwanese has come up. For more than 50 years, we have witnessed the decline of Taiwanese language under the Kuomintang ruled. It leads pessimistic and us disappointed. Our children, one by one are gradually speaking other people’s language. It seems that they have adopted some thieves as fathers and called them A’kofng. If we lost Taiwanese language, we will lose Taiwanese ethnic race (Taiwan binzok) and its culture. It is very unlikely for us to be a Taiwanese. You must have read or heard that “ In order to eliminate an ethnic race, the most effectivemethod is to eliminate their language”. In the past, Chinese in Taiwan employedthe terrorist policy. Their intent is to eliminate our language and culture. They want us to forget that we are Taiwanese and not able to use our language. Chhong-Bi Memorial Fund is in memory of Dr. Ngg Chhong-Bi, a woman truly loves Taiwan. She and her husband, Dr. Ito Kuniyuki, in their life have striving for the preservation of Taiwanese culture and political independence. Her famous and moving statement in her correspondence was, “ My passport maybe Japanese, but the passport of my heart is Taiwan”. She silently did the work until the end of her life (tragic accident in Mt. Fuji). As you recalled, Dr. Ito had stroke while he was visiting Boston in the summer of 1992. Our TAA members were most graceful responded, as we considered him our Japanese son-in-law. He was transferred back to Japan by a special equipped private jet. Later he passed away in 1993. This memorial is to remember her spirit, always silently cultivated, educated for the renaissance of Taiwanese culture. For the last seven years, the Chhong-Bi Memorial Fund has publishing “ Tai-Bun Thong-Sin” (Taiwanese Literature Correspondence). Regardless of the difficulties, they have no complaints. They simply continuing labor in silent. Now they have asked us to support the Correspondence as a co-sponsor so that the publication can be continued. They are seeking at least 100 co-sponsors, each with a donation of $200. Please respond favorably to this call to Chhong-Bi Memorial Fund P. O. Box 501 Scarsdale, NY 10583 Thank you.
