Jason Cox hou taigu-bang e phoe:
For all those interested in Tai-gi,
I am starting a project to create a Hoklo input method on Macintosh, using
the Input Method Plugin Converter provided in Asian Text Extras. I'll be
designing it for Traditional Chinese input on OS X (but it ought to work
fine on OS 8.6 + systems), and I hope that several features can be
incorporated.
First, I hope the input method can be made as sophisticated as possible,
allowing for phrase input with optional tones (much like HOTSYS). This is
not a problem of programming.
Secondly, I hope to include several input methods, including Peh-oe-ji
(Church Romanization), Extended Zhuyin Fuhao, MTSS, Money Boy's phonetic
notation, and perhaps even the Hangul like Taioanji. The more input methods
available, the more people that can be attracted to use a Hoklo language
input. At the very least, POJ and MTSS can be almost effortlessly
incorporated, with Monkey Boy's phonetic notation not presenting too large
of a hurdle.
I'm addressing this e-mail to several people who have experience in Tai-gi
and input methods, and several others who might be interested. I am hoping
that we can get many people to cooperate. For one thing, I believe a
project like this was at least started for LINUX. If that project was
finished, than it might be possible to "simply" recompile that program for
OS X, and not bother with creating a new Input Method with the Plugin
converter.
Otherwise, we would like to avoid starting from scratch. Getting a database
(hopefully in text format) would be an ideal start. If we can get a shared
database, we can have an input method in a matter of hours. I'll ask
everyone (who's interested) to get a hold of all their contacts and see if
we can do that. If we can avoid compiling our own lexicon, we can make this
project so much more reasonable. We might even finish it ;)
Once we have one database using one romanization scheme, we can easily
modify that for other input systems, and before you know it we might have
5-6 different Hoklo input options.
The key here is-- if we get a text database, the work is essentially done.
If a database is not available, then we have to compile our own (lots of
work).
If you're interested in this project, please write me back, and I'll start a
group in my address book for this. Tell me if you want your address shared
with the interested parties are kept to BCC replies.
Thank you,
