Harvard to offer Taiwanese courses this fall Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University will offer Taiwanese courses in the fall, 2001. The instructoris Dr. Chin-an Li, a Taiwanese linguist.
Dr. Li is an expert in Taiwanese linguistics, who graduated from University of Hawaii. He was a student of the internationally well-known Taiwanese linguist, Professor Robert Cheng, with whom he studied Taiwanese phonetics, syntax and sociolinguistics. Dr. Liâs dissertation was a study of Taiwanese lexical change, which won the scholarship yearly award from National Science Council, Taiwan.
Dr. Li was involed in the Taiwanese Language Revitalization Movement since 1991. He is also a famous Taiwanese poet, winning the Eighth Taiwanese Poet Award in 1998. He has published five poetry collections to date. When he studied in the United States, he often made speeches at the Taiwanese Summer Camps held by Taiwanese American Association, and ! at the Taiwanese Student Winter Camps held by Taiwanese Collegian, to promote Taiwanese language and culture.a̍
The courses that Harvard University will offer this fall is a basic Taiwanese conversation class. Spring will offer an intermediate class. The basic class is designed for students who cannot understand Taiwanese. Students, whose native language is not Taiwanese, and the second generation of Taiwanese Americans are encouraged to enroll. The class will be instructed in English, emphasizing on pronunciations and daily conversational skills.
The intermediate class will be instructed in Taiwanese, emphasizing on advanced conversational skills and basic reading. Student who either took the basic class, understand the language, or came from Taiwan will be encouraged to enroll. Any non-Harvard student in the Boston area isalso encouraged to enroll to sit-in.
