Typhoon Haiyan to hit Taiwan today

Taiwan is expected to experience heavy rainfall and strong winds again today and tomorrow while Typhoon Haiyan heads for the northeastern part of the island.

As of press time, Ilan County has announced that government offices and schools in the northeastern county will be suspended today.

Meanwhile, Keelung City and Taipei County have also announced that high schools and elementary schools will be closed today.

Meteorologists with the Central Weather Bureau said at 800 p.m. yesterday that Haiyan was located 460 kilometers southeast of Ilan.

With a 250-kilometer radius, the typhoon is packing maximum winds of 35 kilometers per hour, with gusts of up to 45 kilometers per hour.
