Former President Lee Teng-hui yesterday said the so-called "1992 consensus" never existed, demanding those backing it produce proof that an agreement was really reached between Taipei and Beijing.
/ Cheng Chongtong Li Tenghui chahng kong, peng bo sou-ui-e '1992 kiongsek'; i iaukiu kong-u e lang the-chhut Taipak kah Beijing chin-e u tatseng hiapgi e chengbeng.

Lee said those who claim to possess documents proving that a "consensus" was actually reached never took part in the 1992 cross-strait talks, and he demanded they make public any documents they have to explain their position.

Lee's remarks come as support for President Chen Shui-bian on one hand, and as a rebuke to Kuomintang Chairman Lien Chan on the other.

While Chen rejects the "consensus" as a dangerous fantasy that could lead to the collapse of Taiwan, Lien accuses the president of being inconsistent in dismissing it.

Lien claims that he possesses documents to prove that both Taipei and Beijing negotiators did reach a consensus on allowing themselves to embrace differing interpretations of "one China" during groundbreaking talks in 1992.

Lee, during a talk with press people in a hotel in the eastern county of Taitung, where he was soliciting votes for the Taiwan Solidarity Union, said the "consensus" should not have become an issue, because it never existed.
